Pediatric Orthopaedics

Pediatric orthopedics is an important part of the Orthopedics. This branch of medicine has a long-term tradition in the Czech Republic and Czech orthopedists have an important place in the worldwide history, thanks to prof. Frejka, prof. Pavlik and many others. In these study materials medical students can find some core topics of a pediatric orthopedics - a frequently occurring deformities and diseases of childhood. They can also serve as an basic review of the most common orthopedics diseases.

The Morbus Legg-Calvé-Perthes (Morbus LCP) is an idiopathic juvenile avascular necrosis of the femoral head, which is caused by atack of ischaemia in femoral head epiphysis. It is a severe disease of the children´s hip joint, which can lead to early development of coxarthrosis. Morbus LCP is one of the most frequent disease from the group of avascular necrosis, which may occur in different locations of skeleton.

Another frequent disease in childhood is slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE, Coxa vara adolescens). SCFE may also lead to the development of the severe deformity of the femoral head and it can cause subsequent early onset of coxarthrosis.

Between most frequent occurring congenital deformities we included the developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH). In our country were established a system of screening examination, which enables an early diagnosis and subsequent treatment of this deformity.

Another severe deformity of lower limb, which we can find in the infant is a clubfoot (Pes equinovarus congenitus - PEC). In the last years was significant change the therapeutic procces in PEC. Primary surgical treatment there were replaced, with great success, semioperative Ponseti treatment. It is based on the principles of special manipulation and redress casting with subsequent miniinvasive operative prolonagation of the Achilles tendon. The results which this metode brings are satisfactory and in the most cases it is possible to avoid extensive surgical procedures.
In the study materials students can find also some information about the axial deformity of lower limb – genua valga and genua vara, a lenght inequality of limbs and an arthroscopy.
