Selected chapters from paediatric surgery

This set of educational materials is dedicated to selected topics in the area of paediatric surgery: minor surgery, neonatal surgery, introduction to traumatology, visceral traumatology, acute abdomen, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology and congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract; moreover, the battered child syndrome is mentioned as well.

Minor surgery

Predominantly images of various types of injuries in children: radial head dislocation, paraphimosis, balanitis, perianal thrombosis, pilonidal sinus, knee ligament injuries, sprained ankle, paronychia, inflammation, seroma, dog bite, head injuries in toddlers, paediatric foreign body ingestion.

Neonatal surgery

A short introduction to the classification of congenital disorders is followed by texts and images illustrating some of them: gastroschisis, omphalocele, diaphragmatic hernia, necrotising enterocolitis, meconium ileus and birth injuries (clavicle fracture, femoral shaft fracture, humeral shaft fracture, brachial plexus paresis).

Introduction to traumatology

Specialty definition, epidemiology and classification of injuries, explanation of basic terms (polytrauma, monotrauma, compound injury, serious monotrauma), aetiology of injuries, description of the trauma care system. Texts and images describing the principles of diagnosis and treatment of skeletal injuries, the issue of epiphyseal plates, complications of fractures, compartment syndrome, soft tissue injury.

Visceral traumatology

Specialty definition, classification of abdominal and retroperitoneal injuries, aetiology of abdominal injuries, spleen injury, liver injury, pancreas injury, kidney injury, duodenum injury, stomach injury, jejunum and ileum injury, large bowel injury, mesentery injury, diaphragm injury, abdominal wall injury, adrenal gland injury, multiple trauma injuries, birth trauma. The presentation contains selected case reports for some types of injuries.

Acute abdomen

Predominantly images of some types of acute abdomen: ileocolic intussusception, acute cholecystitis, peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute appendicitis.

Thoracic surgery

Specialty definition, six selected case reports: pneumothorax, haemothorax, bronchogenic carcinoma, congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, neuroblastoma, chest wall deformity.

Plastic surgery

Three presentations dealing with different topics:

Congenital disorders, plastic surgery in children:Specialty definition. Types of congenital disorders that can be corrected by plastic surgery. Congenital disorders of hands, congenital ptosis (blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus syndrome; BPES syndrome), vascular malformations (low-flow, high-flow), combined vascular malformations and hypertrophy syndromes, haemangiomas, lymphangiomas, large congenital melanocytic naevi, epidermolysis bullosa, hypospadias, congenital facial malformations, neonatal solid tumours.

Burns:Aetiology of burns, most frequent causes, classification. Pre-hospital care, hospital care, rehabilitation care and reconstructive care. Conservative treatment, surgical treatment. Healing and complication of burns. Preventing the development of hypertrophic scars and contractures. Principles and contraindications of physiotherapy. Secondary reconstructive surgery.

Local treatment of burns:Texts and images explaining the principles of conservative treatment and surgical treatment of burns.

Surgical oncology

Predominantly images of some types of paediatric malignant tumours: nephroblastoma, pheochromocytoma, hepatoblastoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, mediastinal lymphoma, pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma, sacrococcygeal teratoma, familial adenomatous polyposis, Peutz–Jeghers syndrome, neuroblastoma.

Congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract

Predominantly images illustrating nine selected case reports: oesophageal atresia, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, duodenal atresia, biliary atresia, choledochal cyst, small and large bowel atresia, Ladd syndrome, Hirschsprung’s disease, anorectal malformation (anal atresia).

Battered child syndrome

Guidelines to be followed then suspecting child abuse, circumstances leading to child abuse suspicion, X-ray diagnosis in the battered child syndrome, legal duties, Munchausen syndrome by proxy, risks of unsubstantiated accusation of innocent parents versus risks of leaving the child in an endangering environment.
